Ski pensioner Hirscher: “In the beginning it was horror”

In an interview with the Red Bulltin the ski star spoke in detail about his life after his career as an alpine racer. “It was a horror at the beginning,” said the Salzburg man about the immediate period after his career ended. “It was really, really difficult, especially because as a professional athlete you believe you have to get the most out of every single day. In today's everyday life, this approach no longer has any right to exist. Because it gets pretty tiring in the long run.” 100 phone calls in one day An anecdote shows how intensively Hirscher experienced his everyday life as a ski professional. “At my most stressful time, I once made over a hundred phone calls in one day. I counted it somehow by chance and was shocked. They weren't long conversations, they were about things that kept me busy during a ski season. Logistics, who gets this, who brings that. Suddenly there are days in my life where no one calls me. As cool and practical as a cell phone is, I now know what a gift it is when it doesn't ring for two days. You might miss something at the beginning, but actually there’s nothing missing.” Hirscher continued: “As a professional athlete, I was the to-do list made human. It was necessary to proceed systematically, point by point, in order to ultimately achieve the desired result. Today I’m extremely happy that these things are no longer the issue.” Hirscher makes his TV debut The star has now come to terms with his role as a ski pensioner very well. He spends a lot of time with his family and in the mountains. Now Hirscher even ventured in front of the camera again: On Thursday he hosted the ORF program “A Summer in Austria – Vacation in Red-White-Red”. The fact that Austria's ski hero still attracts the masses becomes clear when looking at the ratings: on average he reached almost 1,2 million viewers with a market share of 36 percent.
