Marco Odermatt takes victory in Sölden

On Saturday had Mikaela Shiffrin defeated the Swiss Lara Gut-Behrami , 24 hours later the Swiss struck back in the person of Marco Odermatt. The 24-year-old snatched Austrian Roland Leitinger's home win and World Cup debut success from under his nose. However, this did not dampen the celebratory mood among the officially 9.800 spectators in the sun-drenched finish area of the Glacier Arena in Sölden.

Odermatt delivered a strong performance in the second round, skilfully compensating for every mistake, no matter how small, and stopping the timekeeping at 2:05,9 minutes. The second-placed world champion Mathieu Faivre couldn't even begin to achieve this and ended up falling back to 11th place. And so only Leitinger remained in the starting hut.

The 30-year-old outsider from Salzburg went into the decision as the half-time leader for the first time. Although he put in a good performance again, this time he couldn't hold a candle to Odermatt. In the end, Leitinger was only 7 hundredths of a second behind. At least the 30-year-old vice world champion from 2017 clinched Austria's first men's giant slalom podium since Marcel Hirscher in 2016. Third place went to the Slovenian Zan Kranjec at the World Cup opening, who was also only 3 hundredths behind. Impressive Maurberger comeback Luca De Aliprandini from Nonsberg was the best Italian at the World Cup opening. He took 8th place. Only he knew about the South Tyroleans most recently derailed by injuries Simon Maurberger to convince. Almost exactly six months after his meniscus operation, he qualified for the second run with the high start number 42 and pushed his way from 29th to 20th place with a rapid ride.

The Ahrntaler was clearly ahead of Riccardo Tonetti, who finished the race in 26th position. Hannes Zingerle (39th) and Alex Vinatzer (46th) could not qualify for the decision, Manfred Mölgg did not start in Sölden.
