Matthias Mayer: Rude awakening after Kitz triumph

During the congratulatory and celebratory slalom after the Kitzbühel downhill triumph, Mayer caught a flu-like infection and therefore canceled the Alpine ski men's World Cup races at the weekend in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The Austrian Ski Association has to present its currently strongest speed skier on the Kandahar.

Message on Instagram “Unfortunately I have bad news for you today. I caught a bad flu during the very stressful last few weeks. After intensive discussions with my doctors, we came to the decision that it would be better for me if I didn't do any exercise this week," wrote Mayer on Instagram.

Mayer recently won the downhill at the Hahnenkamm races and came second in the Super-G. On Monday evening he had to cancel a planned appearance on the Sport und Talk program on Servus TV. ÖSV President Peter Schröcksnadel had reported that Mayer was in bed with a fever of 39 degrees. Mayer is in third place in the Downhill World Cup with 300 points, the Swiss Beat Feuz is leading with 480, ahead of Dominik Paris (384), who has been missing since Kitzbühel due to a torn cruciate ligament. This gives Feuz the chance to take the decisive step in the race for the downhill ball. Vincent Kriechmayr is fourth (254).
