Matts Olsson triumphs at the night spectacle in Alta Badia

The spotlight was primarily on the Swede Matts Olsson, who improved from run to run and knocked the big favorites out of the competition in the knockout system. At the start he held his own against Aleksander Andrienko from Russia, then he defeated the Austrian Stefan Brennsteiner and the Croatian Filip Zubcic before he was able to prevail in the semi-finals against the giant slalom dominator from the previous day, Marcel Hirscher. In the final, Olsson finally put the exceptional Norwegian talent Henrik Kristoffersen in his place with a lead of three hundredths.

Behind the two Scandinavians, Hirscher secured third place on the podium by making Aleksander Aamodt Kilde look old in the “small finale”.

South Tyroleans fail early

The Azzurri, meanwhile, were all miles away from a podium finish. Luca De Aliprandini and Roberto Nani were the only Italians to make it to the round of 16, but that was the end of the game. De Aliprandini had previously eliminated Riccardo Tonetti from Bolzano. “I like this racing format, especially this course here on the Gran Risa. “However, I chose the wrong direction when jumping and lost a lot of time,” Tonetti summed up after the end of the race.

Manfred Mölgg from Enneberg, however, lost out in the opening round against Kjetil Jansrud, while Florian Eisath from Eggental had to give up in the comparison fight with Erik Read. “I put everything into the mix, so I can’t blame myself. However, I am not satisfied with the results here in Alta Badia. There is a lot of work to be done here with a view to the next giant slalom in Adelboden,” says Eisath.
