Mayer amazes with combination coup – bitter pill for Tonetti

Not many people expected this result: Austrian speed ace Matthias Mayer won the combination in Wengen. The 29-year-old was half a second ahead after the descent in the morning, but his real masterpiece came in the slalom in the afternoon. As the first runner to take to the slopes (in the new combined format, the fastest person on the descent starts first in the slalom), he sensationally conjured up the fourth-best slalom time in the snow and thus set a record that no one could beat.

Not even the technical stars - who usually always have an advantage in a combination - could crack Mayer: Alexis Pinturault, who started the slalom 1,68 seconds behind, caught up brilliantly, but was 7 hundredths of a second in the end slower than the Austrian. Victor Muffat-Jeandet, also a Frenchman, came third (+0,67 seconds). As a result, Mayer took his first win in the combination. From a South Tyrolean perspective, Riccardo Tonetti was the great hope after the first round. Thanks to a surprisingly strong descent, the man from Bolzano was 1,09 seconds behind the leader Mayer after the first run - a time that a technical specialist in slalom could beat.

Tonetti himself also knew that. “I’ve never had such a great chance of getting on the podium before,” he said before the start of the second round. But the South Tyrolean didn't present himself flawlessly in the pole forest; he made a serious mistake, especially in the lower part. In the end it was a fifth place. The man from Bolzano still has to wait for his first podium. Dominik Paris, in 4th place after the descent, fell back to 12th place in the slalom. Alexander Prast (29th) and Florian Schieder (31st) can be found further back.

The Lauberhorn descent takes place in Wengen at 12.30 p.m. on Saturday. The slalom is on Sunday (10.15:13.15 a.m. / XNUMX:XNUMX p.m.).
