Mayer magic trip and Paris taboo

Like the descent the day before, the race in Yanqing offered a spectacle. On the one hand, the great weather contributed to this, but above all it was the athletes themselves who got the few spectators in the finish area out of their seats. The big names, led by the outstanding Mayer, showed off their class on the technically demanding course. The silver medal surprisingly went to Ryan Cochran-Siegle, and bronze was the top favorite Aleksander Aamodt Kilde. Marco Odermatt and the South Tyroleans were among the big ones beaten on Tuesday.

The race included everything that makes a skier's heart beat faster: thrilling passages, changes in lead and lots of excitement. Through it all, Mayer managed to defend his Pyeongchang title. The Austrian got off to a strange start, releasing the start bar almost too early, but then ignited the turbo. With complete risk and a direct line, the Carinthian converted a temporary deficit into a huge lead in the lower section. He replaced Kilde at the top, who had already shown what he thought would be the winning run and celebrated extensively at the finish.

However, the now three-time Olympic champion could not follow the rest of the race calmly. Cochran-Siegle, who started after him, showed by far his best race of the season, was in the lead by 18 hundredths of a second until the last split, but ultimately had to line up 0,04 seconds behind Mayer. As a result, he displaced the Norwegian Adrian Smiseth Sejersted, who had already flirted with a sensational medal. Among further running Meanwhile, the South Tyroleans experienced a real debacle. Dominik Paris never got going in his hunt for his first Olympic medal, also made several mistakes and lost a full 2,68 seconds to the best time. Precious metal at the Winter Games remains a taboo for the 32-year-old unless he causes a surprise in the Alpine Combined. Christof Innerhofer fared even worse. The 37-year-old slipped on the inner ski in the lower section when he was already a long way behind. Even medal contenders like Marco Odermatt and Beat Feuz did not finish the race.
