“My last race”: Kjetil Jansrud ends his career

“The downhill run on Saturday will be my last race as an alpine skier,” the 36-year-old begins his post on social networks. “It was a long thought process to come to this decision. Finishing something you’ve done your whole life isn’t easy,” Jansrud writes.

The Norwegian had already announced before the season that this would be his last World Cup winter. But then he had a bad fall in Beaver Creek and suffered a serious cruciate ligament injury. “I want to fight back,” said the 2014 Olympic champion at the time. A few weeks later, Jansrud stunned the ski world when he competed in the Olympics after a lightning comeback (the cruciate ligament injury was treated without surgery). That was apparently his last mission, because now it's over: the downhill run in Kvitfjell on Saturday will be the last race in the ski superstar's life.

“I am happy that I can end my career in Kvitfjell. I won my first race here in 2012 and have been able to race here in front of my family and friends every year so far. I practically grew up here. I wish I could express gratitude in some way," said Jansrud, who also added: "In these dangerous times, my resignation - and this posting - is somehow meaningless. My thoughts and my hopes are with the Ukrainian people. Stay strong." On the podium in every sixth race Jansrud, who was considered a Val Gardena specialist, competed in 356 World Cup races in his career. He finished on the podium 55 times, which means that on average he finished in the top 3 in every sixth race. He even ended up at the top of the podium 23 times. The speed specialist has also won at major events. His greatest successes: the Olympic victory in Super-G in 2014 and the world championship title in downhill in 2019. Now the always likeable Norwegian is particularly looking forward to one thing: “I will now spend a lot of time with my family and the people I love . That’s the only thing that matters.”
