Mikaela Shiffrin: The record and the reindeer puzzle

If the competition in Sölden got the impression that Shiffrin would have become more beatable in the new season, this hope was not given any new fuel in Levi. After finishing second behind sensational winner Alice Robinson at the start, Shiffrin bounced back impressively in her core discipline of slalom.

Record set With her best running time, Shiffrin distanced herself from the Swiss Wendy Holdener by 1,78 seconds and with her 41st career success in the slalom she overtook the Swede Ingemar Stenmark in the “all-time” discipline ranking. “When I was little, I wanted to be the best skier in the world. “I never dared to dream that I would one day have 41 slalom World Cup victories,” said Shiffrin.

The path to her 61st World Cup victory was also helped by Petra Vlhova's failure. Shiffrin also predicted a duel with the Slovakian this season: “She will certainly be very strong again in the next races.” The fourth reindeer for the US star Shiffrin has now won the slalom in Levi for the fourth time. Since it is tradition in the Finnish ski town that the winner gets a reindeer, the American was able to further expand her personal herd. Rudolph (2013), Sven (2016) and M. Gru (2018) are now joined by another four-legged friend.

But Shiffrin doesn't want to reveal the name yet. “It will be something sentimental,” she said after the race and later wrote on Instagram: “I think you will like the name.” Will she dedicate her fourth reindeer to Ingemar Stenmark? Or her recently deceased grandmother Pauline? The ski star will reveal this on social networks shortly.
