Mölgg on his future: “I’ll decide in the next few weeks”

Manfred Mölgg, how are you?

Manfred Mölgg: “Good, I just got home. On Sunday I was seen by Dr. Thomas Egger and Dr. Helmuth Volgger operated in Brixsana. The procedure went well, even better than I expected. Now I have to see how the knee reacts in the next few days.”

How do you remember the fateful moment in the Adelboden giant slalom?

“It was a wonderful day in Adelboden, I was the first to start in the second round. When I was driving at an angle, I pushed with my knee and then it happened: I heard an extremely loud bang and stopped. My trainer and Marcel Hirscher's father took care of me immediately. Strangely enough, I didn't feel much pain, only the bang stayed in my head. To be honest, I haven’t watched the video of the scene yet.”

What happened after that?

“Some doctors looked at my knee at the finish. The knee was stable, so a meniscus problem was initially suspected. However, when I did the magnetic resonance imaging in the hospital, they diagnosed me with a torn cruciate ligament.”

Was the diagnosis a shock for you?

“I wouldn't call it a shock, in a way you're prepared for it. And there are worse things than a torn cruciate ligament. But I was very sorry. All the work I did recently was for nothing. I rode well in Zagreb and Madonna and was generally in strong form. Now Wengen, Schladming and Kitzbühel are the slopes on which I feel particularly comfortable. Unfortunately, I can’t show what I can do there now.”

In the last few hours you have probably received many well wishes...

“Yes, a lot of athletes have written to me, such as Marco Schwarz or my teammates. Because I was still under anesthesia just now, I haven't managed to answer everyone yet (laughs). But I would like to thank everyone who thought of me.”

A torn cruciate ligament usually requires around six months of recovery time. So the season is over for you. Will Manfred Mölgg return to the ski stage at the age of 38?

“The most important thing now is that I get healthy. That's priority number 1. I'll start rehab on Tuesday. I don’t want to worry about the future right now.”

Next year the “home” World Championship is on the program in Cortina. Is that an additional incentive to come back?

“Sure, the World Cup in Cortina is an incentive. However, I would have to reach the level at which I was last. As I said: I'll wait and see how the knee reacts in the next few weeks. Only then will I make a decision about my future.”
