After a dark time: skiing hope can smile again

These pictures send shivers down your spine. Even if the scenes were almost a year and a half ago now. On February 28, 2021, the young Norwegian Kajsa Vickhoff Lie was racing at full speed in the Super-G in Val di Fassa when she fell and badly twisted her leg. She suffered an open fracture and also injured her knee. Her screams of pain could even be heard on TV.

The skiing hopeful, who celebrated her 24th birthday a few days ago, is now on the right track. She can ski again and wants to fully attack next winter. But the months the youngster experienced after the injury were anything but easy. More complicated than expected The rehab took much longer than initially expected. At first, Vickhoff Lie thought that she would be able to ski again after six months. She did everything she could to achieve this because her big goal was the 2022 Olympic Games. But the leg didn't heal as planned. The planned comeback in August was pushed further and further back until the speed specialist finally had to realize that it wasn't enough for the Olympics. The pain was just too much.

A very hard blow for Vickhoff Lie, who was particularly mentally upset by this admission. “All my teammates are going to the Olympics, which is my big dream. And I can't go with you. I just couldn't lie around at home and relax. I had to leave,” the Norwegian told the Norwegian news site dagbladet . So while her team traveled to Beijing, Vickhoff Lie packed her belongings and flew to Sri Lanka. Indian Ocean instead of the Olympics “I heard that there were really strict corona restrictions in Beijing. So for me it was about finding a place where I could have a really cool time on my own. Then I went to Sri Lanka, surfed for two weeks and enjoyed the warmth while the others were locked up in Beijing,” explains the young skier, who has so far climbed to one World Cup podium.

In Sri Lanka, Vickhoff Lie had other ideas.

In the warm climes of the Indian Ocean, Vickhoff Lie was able to completely ignore her serious injury and the need for rehab. “When you go to rehab every day and talk about your leg all the time and try to do things that cause you pain, you are constantly reminded that you are injured. It's no fun.” She particularly enjoys surfing in the holiday paradise, as numerous snapshots on social media prove. “A weight of 100 kilograms has been lifted from my shoulders.” Kaisa Vickhoff Lie The comeback on skis finally followed in April of this year – without any pain, as Vickhoff Lie assures. “A load of 100 kilograms has been lifted from my shoulders,” smiles the likeable Scandinavian, who wants to attack again next winter.
