Neureuther: End of season or end of career?

Felix Neureuther has made himself rare. Before the last race of the season, Germany's most important ski racer only posted a small article on the Internet. “On the way to the final,” he wrote on Instagram over a picture from the bus that apparently took him to Soldeu.

The final slalom of this World Cup winter takes place in Andorra on Sunday (10.30 a.m./13.15 p.m.). It is unclear whether not only a season but also a great German athlete's career will come to an end in the small state in the Pyrenees. The veteran hasn't wanted to reveal what's next for him.

Neureuther, who will turn 35 in just under two weeks, not only left his future open after a season full of accidents, injuries, setbacks and a botched World Cup including slalom threading, but also attached conditions. The German record champion in the World Cup wants changes in the association, but he did not go into detail. “I’ll leave it as it is at the moment,” he said at the World Cup in Sweden in February.

There is a need to speak at the DSV Everyone agrees that there is a need for discussion in the German Ski Association (DSV), which is facing the first World Cup season without a men's slalom podium in 15 years. “Everyone has to come to the table so that all the problem areas can really be discussed,” said Alpine boss Wolfgang Maier before last week in Andorra. He wants to bring all athletes and coaches together for discussion. “If you're not there, you're not there anymore. “I expect everyone to sit at the same table,” he emphasized.

After Soldeu and the subsequent German championships it should be time, a relaxed chat is not planned. Men's head coach Mathias Berthold wants to “get a little harder in tone, get harder in training,” as he announced. “It’s not about everyone being able to stay in their own oasis of well-being.”

It is unclear whether this (also) refers to Neureuther, who has skipped many strenuous training sessions in recent years due to his many achievements and his often fragile body. Nevertheless, the Partenkirchen native delivered reliably for years; from the 2006/2007 season until last year, he ensured at least one DSV podium place in the World Cup every winter. “Felix is motivated and fit,” said Maier before the ski veteran’s appearance. This season he is still without a top three result.
