Neureuther has to postpone his comeback again

A broken thumb slows him down at the World Cup in Levi. The slalom star is traveling back to Munich, where he is to undergo surgery. The 34-year-old from Garmisch-Partenkirchen canceled his comeback planned for Sunday after a year off due to injury at the World Cup slalom in Levi, Finland. "It makes no sense. The pain is simply too great,” said Neureuther on Saturday on ARD. “That’s why I decided to go home and have surgery as soon as possible.”

Neureuther dislocated and broke the thumb on his right hand during training in Finland on Friday. Nevertheless, on Saturday morning he made another attempt to maybe be able to compete in the first slalom race of the season on Sunday with a special rail. But that turned out to be wishful thinking.

Neureuther, who had contested and won his last race in Levi 371 days ago, had actually planned his comeback in Lapland. Before the mishap on Friday, he had hoped for a surprise after good training performances. “If you look at it realistically: It is possible,” said the German World Cup record winner when asked about a top place.

It remains to be seen what will happen to the veteran in the next few weeks. Neureuther may have to forego the trip to North America, where there is a giant slalom in Beaver Creek on December 2nd.
