Neureuther on money in skiing: “Don’t make me a puppet”

The questioner wanted to know whether he could make a good living as a skier. “Yes,” answered Neureuther. However, this only applies to a few skiers. “Only the absolute top, in the top three, earn really well - even though everyone takes the same high risk. You can see this very clearly in the bonuses. The winner of Kitzbühel receives 74 euros, the tenth place only receives 000 euros. Nevertheless, alpine ski racing is the best among winter sports. The reason is the broad ski industry, from ski manufacturers to ski resorts, worldwide. That’s our great luck in the sponsorship sector.”

Speaking of sponsors: the ski star from Garmisch always has a full program in summer. “I work for sponsors for 30 to 35 days in the summer,” said Neureuther. “So this is an absolute full-time job.” But the 34-year-old chooses his sponsors carefully. “The financial aspect is not necessarily the deciding factor, the product and the people have to be right.”

Jungle camp? Never ever So what's wrong? “If I had to have my hair replaced now, I wouldn’t advertise it. And I would never in my life go to the jungle on RTL, never ever! I don't like making a fool of myself. I would never sell myself completely; before that, I would rather do a normal job like everyone else.”

A nice anecdote also shows that Neureuther is a down-to-earth guy. “In 2008, when I was 24, I bought a Porsche. That was the first luxury I afforded myself.” However, Neureuther had a guilty conscience. “I was aware that it would be difficult for me to drive around each other in Garmisch during the day. If someone sees that! I drove the Porsche almost exclusively at night or out and about. But now it's been sitting in the garage for four years - no time left."
