Nicol Delago climbs onto the podium at the Junior World Championships

Delago, who had already made people sit up and take notice in training with the fifth-best time, was able to improve again in the race and achieved an excellent third place. The Wolkensteiner only had to admit defeat to the Canadian Valerie Grenier and the Swiss Beatrice Scalvedi. While two other “Azzurre” placed in the top 17, Laura Pirovano (eleventh) and Jole Galli (20th), Nadia Delago, Nicol’s younger sister, took 21st place. With the bronze medal, Delago not only repeated her third place from the previous year's Junior World Championships, but also crowned an extremely successful season in which, in addition to a podium finish in the European Cup, she was also able to score her first World Cup points. Overall, Delago's precious metal was the seventh azure junior medal in the supreme Alpine discipline: in 2005, the Fanchini sisters Nadia and Elena celebrated a double victory in Bardonecchia, Lucia Recchia won silver in Mont St. Anne in 2000 and Deborah Compagnoni won in Bad Kleinkirchheim in 1986 and 1987 the bronze medal in Hemsedal.

Schieder and Prast have no chance in the men's race However, the local speed aces were unable to intervene in the medal awarding in the men's downhill. The two South Tyrolean starters Florian Schieder (21st place) and Alexander Prast (33rd place) were clearly behind at the finish and missed out on a top result. The American Erik Arvidsson secured the world championship title, beating Austrian Stefan Babinsky and Frenchman Victor Schuller.
