Obereggen: A Croatian surprises – Razzoli second

The 22-year-old Croatian Istok Rodes spoiled the belated birthday present for former Olympic champion Giuliano Razzoli, who turned 34 yesterday: Rodes surprisingly won the slalom on the challenging Maierlpiste in Obereggen ahead of Razzoli and his teammate Elias Kolega, also 22.

Istok Rodes had no one on the bill. The Croatian, who is only number 92 in the FIS world rankings, unobtrusively placed sixth in the first run and then moved to the top with the second-best time in the second run. He took a whopping 1,19 seconds off the half-time leader Razzoli in the second run.

The South Tyroleans quickly, but without fortune Fabian Bacher from Ratschings, tenth after the first round, was an incredible 1,31 seconds faster in the interim than the leading Norwegian Timon Haugan, who came sixth in the final – 1,20 seconds behind Rodes. And the 19-year-old slalom talent Alex Vinatzer, fifth after the first run and already this year's slalom winner at the European Cup in Levi, was leading the interim winner Rodes by 1 seconds. However, four goals before the goal, the Wolkensteiner fell behind and was eliminated.
