Obereggen is calling for the 34th time - VIDEO

At its premiere last year, the slope, which is up to 55 percent steep, received a lot of praise from athletes, trainers and officials. Obereggen is a venue with a race guarantee, as the race has only been canceled twice due to weather conditions since the first edition in 1983, the last time being 17 years ago (2000).

Obereggen, which has already been dubbed the “Kitzbühel of the European Cup”, is home to a “half World Cup” every year. There are more World Cup stars at the start on a regular basis than in almost any other European Cup race. That shouldn't be any different this year. Because the slaloms are few and far between at the beginning of the Olympic winter, some slalom stars are expected to come to Obereggen on December 13th to gain racing practice. After the World Cup slalom in Levi in mid-November, the slalom specialists will only have their second World Cup race on Sunday, December 10th, in Val d'Isere.

This is followed by the European Cup slalom in Obereggen on December 13th (it is the day of the first training for the World Cup downhill in Val Gardena), before the schedule for the slalom runners gets tighter: on December 16th there is a European Cup parallel slalom at Kronplatz, on December 18th European Cup slalom in Fassa and on December 22nd the World Cup slalom in Madonna di Campiglio.

Confidence for the Olympics Seasons with world championships or – like this year – Olympic Winter Games are always something very special for Obereggen. Slalom stars have often gained the necessary self-confidence in Obereggen for the Olympics or the World Cup - and for the World Cup anyway. The Norwegian Leif Kristian Haugen, for example, finished fourth in Obereggen in December 2016. A few weeks later he won World Cup bronze in the giant slalom in St. Moritz.

Looking ahead to the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, in February 2018, memories of Giuliano Razzoli are particularly brought back: in December 2009 he triumphed in Obereggen, and a few weeks later he was crowned Olympic slalom champion.

Incidentally, the list of World Cup winners, world champions and Olympic champions who have already been on the podium at the European Cup in Obereggen is a long one. The now six-time overall World Cup winner and six-time world champion Marcel Hirscher stood there in 2007, exactly ten years ago. Reigning Olympic giant slalom champion Ted Ligety came second in Obereggen in 2004. Reigning Olympic slalom champion Mario Matt's best Obereggen result is the 2003 triumph. Giuliano Razzoli, Reinfried Herbst, Manfred Pranger, Alberto Tomba, Benjamin Raich, Stephan Eberharter, Kristian Ghedina, Luc Alphand, Tomas Fogdoe, Rudi Nierlich, Armin Bittner, Peter Müller and many others were also laughing from the podium in Obereggen.

That was Obereggen 2016 The premiere on the challenging “Maierlpiste” in December 2016 was not won by the then reigning world champion Jean-Baptiste Grange or one of the other top stars, but by an unknown 20-year-old Swiss named Loic Meillard. As in 2015, the Azzurri were badly beaten. Her best was Tommaso Sala in 10th place.

On Wednesday, December 13th, a large part of the slalom world elite is expected again in Obereggen. The prestigious European Cup slalom, which looks back on a 33-year tradition and is therefore the oldest European Cup race ever, is taking place on the “Maierlpiste” for the second time.
