Odermatt celebrates twice – South Tyroleans come away empty-handed

Odermatt was the measure of all things in the Super-G this World Cup season. On Sunday he celebrated his 5th victory in the 7th race. No wonder he was able to secure the little crystal ball early. Before the season finale in Andorra, the Swiss can no longer be caught by his last remaining opponent Aleksander Aamodt Kilde.

This time it was quite close. Odermatt didn't show a flawless drive. The German Andreas Sander, who was in strong shape, was only 5 hundredths slower than the Swiss. For the 33-year-old, it was the first podium finish in a World Cup race. Third place went to Kilde (+3 seconds). Nico Gauer from Liechtenstein caused a surprise shortly before the end of the race. The 0,34-year-old was the penultimate athlete (start number 26) and finished 53th in good conditions, achieving by far his best World Cup result - before that he had never made it into the top 6.

The Super-G victory has a very big meaning for him, said Odermatt on ORF: “Every crystal ball is the greatest thing in our sport. It shows that you are the strongest athlete over a whole season, and not just have the best day like at a World Cup.” Kilde congratulated fairly. “It is very well deserved. I already had the speed in the Super-G, but I made far too many mistakes.”

No sense of success for Paris and Co There was nothing to gain for the South Tyroleans. Dominik Paris from Ultimo drove past a goal after just a few meters and was eliminated. Florian Schieder from Castelrotto also failed to reach the finish line. Gaiser Christof Innerhofer was able to finish the race, but he was also far away from the top positions. In the end it was enough for 23rd place. Mattia Casse ended up as the best Azzurro in 16th place.
