“Personal nightmare”: This fate is affecting the ski world

The name Sophia Arzberger will probably only be known to very few ski insiders. As well as? The German technical specialist is just 21 years old - and has been injured almost exclusively in her career so far. Now the skier from Upper Bavaria is causing quite a stir with a desperate call. Because: She wants to save her career by any means possible.

The story of Arzberger begins in Bruckmühl, a town with 15.000 inhabitants in the Rosenheim district. Arzberger explains that she grew up right next to the Alps, which is why she tried skiing at an early age. Her great passion soon became a big goal: she wanted to become a professional athlete. Although the now 21-year-old was mostly on her own (there was hardly any support from the association), she wanted to fight her way up. But then the nightmare began. A torn ligament becomes a never-ending story During a fitness training session in September 2020, Arzberger was unhappy - he tore ligaments in his ankle. An injury that should actually have healed after six weeks. But for the young German it took a long time. Because the pain didn't go away even after eight months. “I had to have surgery on my ankle,” said Arzberger. However, this did not make the situation any better, on the contrary.

“I had constant pain in my ankle and could no longer even cope with simple everyday situations, such as a short walk,” says the technology specialist. Another operation and another painful rehab followed – “but eight months later I still couldn’t walk without pain. “I was trapped in my personal nightmare,” said Sophia Arzberger’s emotional words. “You are my last chance.” Sophia Arzberger So what now? “Various conservative therapies didn’t work, and so I had to go under the knife for a third time in August 2022.” Huge bad luck that happened to this motivated athlete. But she sees light at the end of the tunnel. “Today, four weeks after my third and final ankle operation, I am more motivated than ever before,” says Arzberger combatively. Your next goal: make it to the European Cup. And from then on we should keep going upwards, ideally all the way to the top: “My big goal is to win the overall World Cup!” A season costs 45.000 euros In order to achieve this, Sophia Arzberger needs financial resources, which she would like to obtain, among other things, through a crowdfunding campaign. The Bavarian calculates that a ski season costs her 45.000 euros. That's why she now made an emotional appeal to the fans and the ski world: "You are my last chance to make my big dream come true."
