Peter Fill: “I imagined the ski guesthouse differently”

The South Tyrolean population has to stay at home these days because of the corona pandemic. What does Peter Fill's daily routine look like at the moment? Peter Fill: “My children decide that. In the morning the alarm goes off at 7 a.m. at the latest, then we all have breakfast together and then we have to come up with something to entertain the little ones. We have a garden, a terrace and a parking lot where we set up courses and complete them. I also always train a bit in the weight room in the morning.”

It has now been 2 months since you ended your career. How does the ski guesthouse feel?

“I imagined her differently.”

In what way?

“That you don’t just sit around at home (laughs). No, overall it still feels good. I don't regret quitting. I'm also happy that I was able to do a final race and celebrate a bit with my colleagues. Last week a final party was planned on the Alm with many of my companions, but unfortunately it fell through.”

“In the last few races, my teammates weren’t always very welcome.” Don't you miss skiing?

“I watched the last World Cup races on television and I have to say that I'm glad I wasn't there. In Saalbach, for example, there were difficult piste and weather conditions. I also noticed that my teammates weren’t always very welcome.”

What do you mean?

“When the last races took place in Norway, the coronavirus thing got worse. I have always been in contact with some teammates and coaches and they have told me that they were looked at askance just because they were Italian. It was a difficult moment.”

At the end of the World Cup season, Aleksander Aamodt Kilde grabbed the big ball.

“Definitely fully deserved. Compared to last year, he has gained the most of all of them, especially in the giant slalom, he has made huge steps forward. That was also the deciding factor for the overall victory. I'm a little disappointed with Alexis Pinturault and Henrik Kristoffersen: Not that they had a bad season, but the consistency of the last few years was missing. After Marcel Hirscher's resignation there was a lot of pressure on her shoulders. Kilde, on the other hand, had the advantage of being an outsider. It’s great that he held up the downhill flag.”

“I would be interested in becoming a coach. I will definitely tackle that in the future.” Assuming Dominik Paris hadn't been injured: would it have been possible for him to compete for the big ball until the end?

"That is difficult to say. He was extremely good in his downhill and super-G disciplines, and he also did well in the combined event. But ultimately, in my opinion, you need 4 disciplines. However, if he had continued driving so consistently, there would definitely have been a chance of overall victory. Too bad about the injury. But I think Domme will come back strong and give us all a lot of joy.”

Let's get back to you. Have you already thought about what comes next – after your career?

“Sure, I’ve already given some thought to it. However, making a definitive decision is difficult in the current situation. So I don’t really know what my near future will look like yet.”

Would a commitment as a trainer be an option?

“Yes, that would appeal to me and I will definitely do it, but not immediately. I'm fresh out of skiing. In order to be a trainer, I first have to prepare and take the course. In the long term, my goal is to work in this area.”
