Peter Fill and the Lauberhorn: A success story

Peter Fill and Wengen, it was love at first sight. The Lauberhorn downhill run has been Fill's favorite route in the World Cup circuit since January 16, 2010. A year ago, after a six-month injury break, Fill qualified for the Winter Olympics in Vancouver with an eighth place finish and made an impressive return to the top of the world. Peter Fill and the Lauberhorn have a very special history.

In Wengen, Fill finished in the top ten five times. He hasn't achieved that on any other World Cup track, not even in Kvitfjell, where he finished in the top ten four times. And the other “Azzurri” cannot keep up with Fill’s track record at the foot of the Eiger, the Jungfrau and the Mönch. Christof Innerhofer finished seventh in the top ten in the longest of all World Cup downhill runs just two years ago, while Werner Heel narrowly missed the podium in fourth place last year - also his only top result.

The South Tyrolean speed specialist who skis the Lauberhorn so precisely and, above all, quickly is and remains Peter Fill. Six years ago he scored his first World Cup points in his first appearance in Wengen. But not with a place around 20 – Fill came seventh on his debut. The victory went to Michael Walchhofer, who will be mastering the Russi Jump, Hundschopf and Canadien Corner for the last time this weekend. “Walchi” will then retire. After this seventh place in January 2005, the 28-year-old from Castelrotto improved by one place a year later and finished sixth after around 2:30 minutes of driving.

In January 2007, Fill reached the podium, then the “crisis” followed.

Then, on January 13, 2007, Fill's big moment came on the Lauberhorn: He came third, beaten only by Bode Miller, who was at the top twice, and the Swiss local hero Didier Cuche, who, like Fill, is still missing a win in his home race .

Once there was a “crisis” in the relationship between Peter Fill and Lauberhorn. That was the year after Fill's rapid descent to the podium. On January 13, 2008, Fill was 22nd. But the next year, Fill was back to full strength and came ninth. The aforementioned eighth final place followed last year.

This year, unlike last year, Peter Fill is in top shape. At least from this point of view, nothing stands in the way of adding another chapter to the success story of Peter Fill-Lauberhorn next Saturday...

Peter Fill and the Lauberhorn: A success story

Last year Peter Fill came, saw and won on the Lauberhorn. Figuratively. After a six-month injury break following a complicated abdominal muscle injury, the Castelrotto native unexpectedly came eighth. This weekend the success story will be enriched by another chapter.
