Podium at chaos race in Kitzbühel! Paris is finally back

A brutal route, numerous interruptions, serious falls and great performances from the best skiers in the world. The race opener at the Hahnenkamm was quite something - despite the lack of stars, starlets and thousands of spectators. From a South Tyrolean perspective, there is still reason to be happy, because Dominik Paris climbed the first speed podium of the season in third place.

In Kitzbühel, of all places, the 31-year-old from Ultimo is on the podium for the first time since his cruciate ligament tear. A year ago, Paris was injured while training in nearby Kirchberg in the run-up to the Hahnenkamm races. Now the South Tyrolean is finally back, as he proved with third place in the first of two downhill runs. Christof Innerhofer, who doesn't seem to be completely fit after recovering from the corona infection, lost a lot of time (+3). “Domme” and “Inner” have their next chance on Saturday (3,04 a.m.), when the traditional Hahnenkamm descent takes place. After Bormio winner Ryan Cochran-Siegle was initially caught in the traverse after the jump on the edge of the local mountain, Urs Kryenbühl had a nasty fall on the finish jump at almost 150 kilometers per hour. Several downhill skiers had major problems with the huge jump before the finish line. It is quite possible that FIS race director Emmanuel Couder, who Markus Waldner tested positive for Corona replaced, reacted and had the jump further defused before the second descent on Saturday. The poor visibility that arose after the long break in the wind (the race was interrupted for a long time after the 23rd runner) also caused trouble. But because it takes at least 30 athletes to start, the World Cup aces were sent out of the starting house until this quorum was reached. Almost exactly a year after a serious knee injury, Dominik Paris is (almost) his old self again. The Ultner downhill colossus achieved its first podium of the season on Friday at the first downhill run in Kitzbühel. The race was overshadowed by serious crashes and many interruptions.
