Riccardo Tonetti has competed in a World Cup 125 times in his life. However, he has so far been denied a podium place. It seems like magic, after all the man from Bolzano has often been very close in the last two years, but in the end the famous hundredths of a second were always missing. At the 2019 World Championships in Åre he came fourth in the combination, and this year - also in the combination - he has two fifth places and one fourth place.

“That annoys me,” says Tonetti SportNews , asked about the missing podium. “It's a shame and a bit painful to always come 'only' fourth or fifth. But in the station wagon I am now always at the front. This means that I can keep up with the level of others. On the other hand, it also means that I still have to improve something so that it is enough for the podium.” The 2026 Olympics as the final goal? But that doesn't give Tonetti a headache. The 31-year-old simply enjoys skiing too much. “My goal now is to go to the 2022 Olympics. After that we'll look further. The 2026 Olympics in Italy is also an issue for me; that could be the big final goal, so to speak, because I would be 36 years old by then. Of course, the conditions have to be right: Firstly, I have to be healthy, secondly, I have to be competitive and thirdly, the family has to agree.”

In general, family plays a major role in Riccardo Tonetti's life. In the summer of 2018, his wife Angela gave birth to their son Alessandro. “When we were at home together during the Corona period, I really enjoyed it. Watching the little one grow up is something special,” said Tonetti. Plans for life afterward The technology specialist also attaches great importance to having a second mainstay alongside sport: he completed his master's degree in management last year. Is he already thinking about life after his career? “At the moment I'm still fully focused on skiing, but of course you think about it every now and then. I've been active in skiing for a long time now, I've seen a lot and gained a lot of experience. It would be nice to work somewhere after my career where I can combine that and bring it into play.” And a coaching job? “That wouldn’t really appeal to me. But never say never.”

First of all, Tonetti wants to focus on skiing. At 31 years old, he still has a lot ahead of him.
