Resignation on his birthday: German ski ace quits

Farewell party instead of a birthday party: That's what it meant on Monday for a German ski ace who announced the end of his career on, of all days, a happy day.

Andrea Filser celebrated her 31st birthday on Monday. This day of all days was supposed to be a big turning point in her life: the German slalom specialist announced her departure from the ski circus. After 16 years, Filser is no longer involved in competitive sports.

Filser has competed in a total of 57 World Cup races in her career, with a 13th place being her best placement. She celebrated her greatest success at the World Championships in Cortina 2021: There, Filser won the bronze medal with the German team in the team competition. The 31-year-old also had to endure numerous setbacks in her career. She broke her lower leg, tore her cruciate ligament and also injured her ankle, but Filser still got up again and again.

Emotional words

“My career has included many beautiful moments and successes that I always look back on fondly,” says Andrea Filser. “These experiences motivated me to fight back after every setback. Last season, despite my enormous commitment to the race, I was unable to reach my performance limits and therefore was unable to achieve my personal goals.” That is why the decision to retire was ripe. After Thomas Dreßl and Josef Ferstl, the German ski team is losing another ski ace.
