Resignation in tears: Austrian ski great has had enough

At the Interior Ministry in Vienna, Ramona Siebenhofer informed the public on Friday about her departure from competitive sports. The 31-year-old will start working as a police officer in the Murau district office in the middle of the year. “I’m now looking forward to a new phase of my life,” said Siebenhofer.

Siebenhofer tearfully stated that the main reason for her decision was that she no longer had the full motivation and conviction for professional sports. She already felt that at the World Cup final in Soldeu in March. “Even with some distance, I have to say that I am no longer prepared to subordinate my entire life to skiing,” said Siebenhofer, who, among other things, owes her life to her partner, her uncle Werner, “who was my first coach,” her sponsors and her club USV Krakowebene explicitly thanked.

Seven times on the World Cup podium Siebenhofer made her World Cup debut on December 28, 2009 in Lienz in a giant slalom. All of her seven podium places came in the downhill. In January 2019 she celebrated two victories in Cortina d'Ampezzo within 24 hours. Although the Styrian from Krakaudorf had her strengths in the fast disciplines, she acted as an all-rounder and also competed in the giant slalom, the Alpine combined and even some slaloms.

Siebenhofer had no luck at major events. She ended her career, so to speak, “unfinished” without winning a medal. Two Olympic Games and four World Cup participations are on her sporting resume, and at the World Championships she came close at least a few times with two fourth and three fifth places. In Åre she missed combined bronze in 2019 by just four hundredths of a second.
