Oxygen affair: Luitz faces disqualification

The independent anti-doping panel of the world association FIS, chaired by Canadian Patrick Smith, has recommended that the 26-year-old from Allgäu be disqualified. The German Ski Association (DSV) confirmed this on Friday.

Alpine director Wolfgang Maier reported on the sidelines of the World Cup in Val Gardena that the DSV had received a corresponding email from the FIS on Thursday evening. This grants Luitz and the association the right to comment within 15 days. “There are two options,” said Maier: “Either we accept or we object.”

Before making a decision, Maier said he wanted to have the letter written in English translated into German. “It’s now about the details,” he emphasized: “Then we will decide together with Stefan what we will do.”

Maier insists that the FIS should not speak of a doping case, “otherwise I’ll go to CAS!” I would like to see whether they convict an athlete of doping for a substance for which there is not even any control. This is intolerable!”

Luitz had inhaled oxygen before the final round of the giant slalom in Beaver Creek/USA on December 2nd, thus violating FIS rules. However, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) code allows the use of oxygen. According to experts, a performance-enhancing effect is at least questionable.
