“Owes me money”: When ski tips get expensive

Lucas Braathen and Rasmus Windingstad haven't had it easy in recent years. Both ravaged by injuries, they had to slowly fight their way back. At the start of the World Cup, both were finally fit again - and promptly made it into the top 10. Now Braathen and Windingstad revealed why things were going so well for them on the Rettenbachferner.

Thanks to the best running time in the second round, Lucas Braathen worked his way up from 19th to seventh place. The 21-year-old hadn't expected this, especially since he was making his comeback after a nine-month break. “It's a bit touching, to be completely honest,” Braathen told the TV station NRK: “I didn’t know what to expect from myself since I have no experience with comebacks.” Coming back and not having a completely hopeless day is a victory. Only partially an individual sport His compatriot Windingstad was crucial for the race to catch up, as he moved up twelve places in the decision and came in tenth. When Braathen pushed himself out of the starting gate, the 27-year-old was in the hot seat of the leader, but that didn't stop him from sending tips to Braathen. “Rasmus was crucial for me. He explained to me two tactical changes that deviated from our original plan,” reveals the man from Oslo and adds: “That’s the advantage of being Norwegian in skiing. We climb the ladder together. Next time I'll be the one to give Rasmus the advantage. I’m eternally grateful for that.”

Windingstad was enthusiastic about Braathen: “It is highly deserved and incredibly impressive that he is back after the injury and is already achieving top positions. That says a bit about his caliber, but also what we can achieve as a team.” The giant slalom specialist jokingly added that Braathen “maybe owes him some money now”. It was nice to hear that some tips helped and he knew that he would get everything back.
