Black after cruciate ligament tear: “The overall World Cup is still the goal”

The 23-year-old tore the anterior cruciate ligament and the medial meniscus in his left knee in the Combined Super-G in Bansko on February 22nd. Nine and a half weeks later, the rehabilitation measures are going according to plan. Schwarz has targeted the Glacier opener on October 27th in Sölden.

But he doesn't want to force himself out of this wish. “I'll let it happen to me, I want to be 17 percent fit,” explained the Carinthian on Tuesday at a press conference in Vienna. “If that’s right, I’ll get back in.” That could not be until November XNUMXth at the traditional slalom season start in Levi. ÖSV President Peter Schröcksnadel doesn’t want to see the “deadline” here either: “He should take his time, there is no pressure. It could also be early next year.”

Schwarz appreciates that there will be a mid-season in which it is not about qualifying for a major event. “It’s a good fit,” said the Olympic runner-up in the 2018 team competition. “Since there are no World Cup or Olympic Games next season, I don’t have that much stress.” But Schwarz doesn’t want to back down: “I’ve planned to be back to get involved in all disciplines. The overall World Cup is still the big goal. But now I have to see how it works.” Black made its breakthrough last winter “Blacky” really made a breakthrough last season. On New Year's Day at the City Event in Oslo and shortly later in the combination in Wengen, Schwarz landed his first two World Cup victories, and in February he became a three-time World Cup medalist. There was silver again in the team competition, plus bronze in the combination and slalom. In the goal run in Aare, he completed an Austrian triple success behind Marcel Hirscher and Michael Matt.

Just two days later, Schwarz followed up with another podium finish at the City Event in Stockholm with third place, and another three days later the combination from Bansko was on the program. It was Schwarz's sixth competition within eleven days, including - with the best time in the second run - fifth place in the World Cup giant slalom. This staccato of missions turned out to be perhaps too violent. Schwarz: “If I were to be in that situation again, I think I would skip a race.”
