Sensation in Kitzbühel: Schieder on the podium

What was that, Florian Schieder? 2nd place in the Kitzbühel downhill, beaten only by Vincent Kriechmayr. This is a sensation, there is no other way to describe this performance by the 27-year-old from Castelrotto, who started with number 43.

The knee is broken, his career was still hanging by a thread in the summer and now this: Schieder is on the podium in the first Hahnenkamm downhill run of 2023 (there is the second one on Saturday)! In the end, the South Tyrolean was 23 hundredths short of Kriechmayer. Without the weak start (only the 45th time in the second section), victory would have been possible. Nevertheless, the result is a sensation for Schieder and a well-deserved reward for years of backbreaking work. In the World Cup he has never been better than 13th (!) - in the current season in Val Gardena and Bormio. The South Tyrolean came back from his long injury break better than he ever was.

Goldberg and Paris knocked off the podium Schieder's joy was Jared Goldberg's sorrow. The American - he started the race with number 28 - was on the verge of becoming a sensation. At the finish he came third, knocking Paris off the podium. In the end, the 3-year-old from Boston only finished in fourth place. Goldberg was 31 hundredths behind the Swiss Nils Hintermann, who came third (+4). Kitzbühel and Bormio are the favorite routes from Paris. While the Stelvio piste in Bormio suits him like no other piste, the Kitzbühel myth is deeply rooted in South Tyroleans. On the Streif, Paris feels in its element and therefore (almost automatically) comfortable. Paris already has eight chamois in the trophy cabinet in his basement. Even though it was just not enough for the podium in the first Hahnenkamm downhill run on Friday, 5th place proves the improving form. There is also the next chance tomorrow, Saturday (11.30 a.m.).

Many top drivers with big problems Snowfalls in recent days have transformed Kitzbühel into a winter wonderland. There was no snowfall on Friday, but not the best skiing weather either. The poor ground visibility (and the course itself) made it difficult for even the best downhill skiers in the world. Marco Odermatt, Daniel Hemetsberger and Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, who was riding with a broken hand, had huge problems and were only able to avoid a crash with luck. The Italian Mattia Casse missed a possible top place due to a serious mistake in the middle section. Henrik Røa got it badly. The Norwegian fell at the finish, broke his leg according to initial diagnoses and had to be transported away by helicopter.

Christof Innerhofer kept up with the top riders in the middle and lower stretches, but didn't make it into the top 20. The same applies to Beat Feuz, who ends his career on Saturday.

Sensation in Kitzbühel: Schieder on the podium
