Shiffrin: The day when fate struck hard

On the very day that Mikaela's father Jeff had a fatal accident in their home of Colorado. “I was so excited about this project, but life works in strange ways,” writes the American on Instagram. “My brother called me and reported the accident.” She then immediately set off with her mother Eileen towards Colorado, where she spent the last few hours at her father’s side.

In the article, which according to Shiffrin was completely different than originally planned, ski greats such as Bode Miller and Ingemar Stenmark also had their say. They were incredibly happy to hear their praise, but “what was even nicer was the way in which journalist Greg Bishop captured the values that my father and mother taught me and Jeff (her brother, editor's note),” says Shiffrin.

And there is also a reason why she only now turned to the public about this: “I only posted the cover now because it didn’t feel like the right time before.” But now the moment has come to tell everyone who contributed. “I wish my father had had the opportunity to read the story. I can imagine his smile and the sparkle in his eyes,” Shiffrin concludes.
