Shiffrin: Emotional reunion with cancer patient Emma

Are (SID) Olympic champion Mikaela Shiffrin experienced particularly emotional moments at the Alpine World Cup final in Are - and not just because of her record victory in the slalom. The American reunited with 15-year-old cancer patient Emma Lundell in Sweden, who she called an "inspiration." Lundell asked Shiffrin for a photo in December 2012 after her first World Cup victory at the same place and told her that she had leukemia. The two have kept in touch ever since. "She makes me a better athlete, a better ski racer, hopefully a better person - better in every way," Shiffrin said. The American (23) gave Lundell the bouquet of flowers she had received for her ninth win of the season in the Slalom World Cup, with which she replaced Janica Kostelic (Croatia) as the athlete with the most successes in a discipline in one winter. Lundell also accompanied Shiffrin to the press conference in Are. The ski star “gave her strength” in her fight against blood cancer, said the teenager. "She means everything to me. The way she skis, the way she is, just wonderful, a wonderful person. It helped me so much when she said: 'Keep fighting!'" she said. She is no longer being treated, but is not yet officially cured. Shiffrin praised Lundell's admirable attitude despite serious illness. "She's a light in the world. If I had something like that, I wouldn't be able to do anything anymore. Seeing her so strong gave me energy too," she said. When she's having problems, she often thinks of Lundell and tells herself: "Shut up, you're fine, carry on!"
