Shiffrin: “They love it when I’m not there”

It was early February when Mikaela Shiffrin, a resident of Folgaria, received a call that changed her life. Her father, Jeff, had suffered serious injuries in a domestic accident, to which he eventually succumbed. Shiffrin immediately set off for home with her mother Eileen and stood by her father in the last hours of his life. The American then largely withdrew, put her skis away and only wanted to get back into the World Cup in Åre at the beginning of March. At this point she had given up the lead in the overall World Cup and the lead in the slalom classification to Federica Brignone and Petra Vlhova respectively. The general attack was to take place in Sweden in order to win the crystal balls after all. But nothing came of it, the coronavirus put a stop to her plans. “There are so many things that were there. Things I wanted before we (you and mother Eileen, editor's note) lost the most important person in our lives," Shiffrin told the Internet portal Ski racing in a detailed interview. Not out for revenge “And the rest of the world moves on. They continued skiing, they celebrated when they won. Whoever it was. They talked about how exciting it is to wear the red jersey of the leaders and win the overall classification. And all I could think about was, 'Man, people love it when you're gone. People love it when you're not there. Maybe I shouldn't come back because they don't really want you there.' That’s its own kind of mental hurdle that needs to be overcome,” reveals Shiffrin. However, it's not about having a desire for revenge next season: "I'm trying to keep that attitude away from myself as much as possible." Probably also because Shiffrin had emphasized several times that Federica Brignone deserved to win the overall World Cup.
