Shiffrin's “love doping” and Italy's cat misery

Mikaela Shiffrin met on Saturday narrowly prevailed against Lara Gut-Behrami and thus achieved the first victory in the first race. She was able to count on a special fan: Aleksander Aamodt Kilde was standing in the finish area and was really excited about both runs. The Norwegian – for his part the overall World Cup winner from 2020 – has been Shiffrin's friend since the summer , together they make a glamor couple. At the same time, they are also each other’s mentors.

“It's just so much fun to talk to him about skiing. “I love knowing that he’s watching me and that we’ll talk later about what I can do better,” Shiffrin enthuses in the ORF interview. Kilde also actively intervened on Saturday and gave his girlfriend tips, as she later told ARD. “He stayed out here and we chatted after the first run. He gave me some good critiques.”

Shiffrin continued: “I never thought I could have a friend at the finish who wasn't a distraction. He's on the same wavelength and he gives me motivation and strength." The "love doping" obviously didn't fail to have its effect. However, it will still take some time for the roles to be reversed - i.e. for Shiffrin to cheer on her Kilde from the stands: after tearing his cruciate ligament last winter, the Scandinavian decided to skip the giant slalom on Sunday and start the season later. So while Shiffrin is in seventh heaven, Italy's highly acclaimed giant slalom riders had a start to forget. Marta Bassino and Federica Brignone were eliminated, Sofia Goggia only ended up in 16th place. The frustration was correspondingly great afterwards. “As far as Azzurre’s performance is concerned, I’m disappointed,” said Goggia. “For what Marta, Federica and I could achieve, 16th place is simply not enough as the best placement. We can do a lot more, but we have to look forward.” “That was a lesson.” Federico Brignone Federica Brignone got stuck on a goal in the second half and was eliminated. “Rule number 1: Leave the gates standing.
