Victory in the Downhill World Cup: Goggia follows in Kostner's footsteps

The hundredth duel between Goggia and her long-term rival Lindsey Vonn, which had been explosive throughout the entire season, found its fitting conclusion at the World Cup final in Are. The American won the downhill with a lead of six hundredths over Goggia and, thanks to her 82nd victory, is only four successes away from the all-time record set by Swede Ingemar Stenmark. But Vonn couldn't be happy, because second place was enough for Goggia to maintain her lead in the discipline rankings. The Italian Olympic champion took victory in the downhill classification by just three points. Things got particularly exciting when Vonn's teammate Alice McKennis put in a bomb time, but ended up third behind Goggia. If she had pushed Lombard away, the ball would have gone to Vonn.

“It paid off” But Goggia wrote a new chapter in Italian skiing history. She is the first “Azzurra” since Isolde Kostner to win a Speed World Cup. The woman from Val Gardena won the downhill ball in 2001 and 2002. “I'm really overwhelmed. The last few days weren't easy, I felt tired and had to mobilize the last reserves of strength. But it paid off,” beamed Goggia in the winner’s interview. Schnarf records the best downhill result In addition to Goggia, another starter in the Italian team was able to enjoy a strong performance. Although it wasn't enough for Hanna Schnarf to place on the podium, with sixth place she achieved her best downhill result and at the same time her eighth top ten placement of this World Cup season. The woman from Olanger, who drove particularly well in the lower part of the route, was only 15 hundredths behind third-placed McKennis in the end.
