Silver sensation: A South Tyrolean shines at the Junior World Championships

Vicky Bernardi won't soon forget this day. On Thursday, January 19th, she had her first big skiing moment. At the Junior World Championships, the 20-year-old from Abbey sensationally won the silver medal in the downhill.

Bernardi is considered a great ski talent in South Tyrol. So far, the Ladin native has mainly competed in FIS races, but has also competed in the European Cup, where her best downhill result was 27th place. Now Bernardi caused a big bang in St. Anton.

Only 3 hundredths are missing from gold The South Tyrolean had already indicated in training that she could be good for a surprise with places 10 and 5. In the race on Thursday she went one better. In the very short descent, which lasted less than a minute, Bernardi only had to admit defeat to the Swiss Stefanie Grob. In the end she was only three hundredths of a second faster than the Ladin woman. Third place went to Norwegian Pernille Dyrstad Lydersen, who remained 0,35 seconds behind the winner.

Meanwhile, Lara Colturi narrowly missed out on a medal. The 16-year-old Italian, who is considered one of the biggest talents in the ski circus and competes for Albania, missed bronze by five hundredths of a second and came fourth. Colturi's strengths lie in slalom and giant slalom anyway. Fifth place went to Alice Calaba, also an Italian. The top favorite to win, the World Cup-proven German Emma Aichner, landed in 6th place.

Sara Thaler also makes a strong showing In addition to Vicky Bernardi, another South Tyrolean achieved a strong result. Sara Thaler, who only jumped on the World Cup bandwagon at the last moment, completed the descent in 12th place, underlining her extremely strong form. Less than ten days ago, the 18-year-old from Ortisei took fourth place in the European Cup, her best career result.

In the men's junior category, the downhill world championship title went to the Slovenian Rok Aznoh, who prevailed ahead of the Frenchman Alban Elezi Cannaferina (+0,50 seconds) and the Swiss Livio Hiltbrand (+0,82). Max Perathoner from Wolkenstein ended up in 27th place.
