Ski trouble in Italy: “That doesn’t make much sense to me”

There is a coaching earthquake in the ski circus ( You can read the story about this on s+ ). One case made a particularly big splash in Italy: Matteo Guadagnini is no longer the head coach of the slalom women. Two years ago, the 2-year-old from Fiemme Valley took the largest ski construction site at the “Azzurre” under his wing and although he didn’t achieve any outstanding successes, there were big steps forward. This year his ladies had to deal with a lot of bad luck with injuries. It has been clear since the beginning of the week: Guadagnini is no longer needed by FISI and will be replaced by a new coach. This causes a lack of understanding - especially for the coach himself, who was in the interview Sciaremag.it certainly strikes a rough tone. “The FISI told me that a change was needed.” He received no explanation from the Italian winter sports association as to why this change was being made. “I was offered another job, but look: I'm not even saying what it was. I declined because if I don't do well for the women's slalom project, that means I'm no longer suitable for FISI as a whole.” Slalom team as a problem child Did he feel bad after this decision? “Yeah, it’s okay. For me it makes little sense. We started a women's slalom project three years ago and started from scratch, so to speak. Now the Olympic season is just around the corner. After these four years, I would of course have understood if an analysis had been done. I would have even asked for that myself to know whether we should continue like this or not.” However, the FISI got ahead of the coach and carried out this analysis after just three years - the result, i.e. the expulsion, is clear. “I feel sorry because this group has grown. “We just needed a little more patience,” said Guadagnini. The women's slalom team has been the problem child in the Italian ski camp in recent years. This year that hasn't changed: With Martina Peterlini (7th place in Jasna) and Irene Curtoni (8th place in Levi), there were only two athletes who were ever in the top 10 once. The latter ended her career after this season.
