Ski crack devastated: “My heart is broken”

The American Laurenne Ross has had a tough time. At the beginning of February 2019, the speed lady injured her knee so badly while training for the World Championships in Åre that she was out for a year and a half. She didn't compete in any races last winter, but she worked hard on her comeback for the coming season. Recently she even launched a fundraising appeal so that she could afford her own trainer – because her goal is clear: she wants to still have a say in the World Cup – where she raced into the top 28 10 times, including two times on the podium – even at the age of 2. But the hopes of taking part in the first speed races of the season have dwindled to a minimum in the last few days. Ross fell during giant slalom training and injured his knee again. “I cannot express how heartbroken I am. I fell in training and my knee immediately hurt. Hurts bad. “The shock hit me like a tsunami,” said the 32-year-old’s emotional words. “It feels like the universe has let me down.” Laurenne Ross “It looks like I'll be able to get away without surgery. I'm still going to need some time to heal," says Ross, who adds: "I'm like, 'Again? Why now? Why me?' Some people say, 'Everything happens for a reason,' but I've given up looking for that reason. I realize that we take a risk every time we put on our skis, every time we step out of the house, every time we fall in love. I understood that. But it feels like the universe has let me down.” But Ross is also combative. “I am discouraged, angry and afraid. But I will work through these feelings. I also want to put this event behind me and come back stronger – no matter what happens.” Ross received a lot of support from current and former athletes on social media. “Step by step – you will get through this too,” commented former teammate Lindsey Vonn, for example.
