“Everything doesn’t always have to get bigger and more gigantic. In my opinion, we should rather reduce and not inflate the Olympics even further and make them more unaffordable for venues,” Mittermaier told the German Press Agency on the occasion of her 70th birthday next Wednesday (August 5th). The Upper Bavarian had become a star with her two Olympic victories in Innsbruck in 1976 and was nicknamed “Gold-Rosi”. At that time, only three events were held per gender. Five races plus one team competition were held in Pyeongchang in 2018, and parallel races are to be added at the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing. “I think that the abundance of disciplines and competitions has become unmanageable,” said Mittermaier, Felix Neureuther’s mother. “It would be great if we could focus more on highlights that offer the athletes and spectators a better and more sustainable presentation.” Mittermaier also criticized the fact that doping offenses – such as those committed by the Russians at the 2014 Games in Sochi – were not consistently punished. “Doping doesn’t work at all. “That should be punished much more consistently,” she demanded. “If a country does not adhere to the rules of fair play, then it should be sanctioned. I’m disappointed in the IOC for not taking a stricter line.” But that didn't take away her joy of sport. “No, for me pure skiing is still the most beautiful thing there is and it will always make my heart soar,” said Mittermaier, who now enjoys the sport with her grandchildren.
