Ski pioneer Ivo Mahlknecht is dead

Pneumonia is listed as the cause of death. Mahlknecht was taken to the Brixen hospital 9 days ago, no further details are known. Mahlknecht, who was born in St. Ulrich in 1939, made it to the national team in the 60s and was considered a multi-talent in ski circles because he was highly gifted in every discipline. The Ladin native celebrated his greatest successes at national level: he won a total of 10 (!) Italian championship titles. At the start of the World Cup premiere Mahlknecht made his international debut in 1964 at the Olympic Games in Innsbruck, where a 15th place in the slalom remained his best result. 2 years later, at the World Championships in Portillo (Chile), he reached 6th place in the combination. The man from Val Gardena also achieved his pioneering status by taking part in the inaugural season of the World Cup in 1966/67. However, he was denied a chance to get onto the podium. Even after his career ended in 1968, Mahlknecht remained loyal to skiing. In addition to his role as race director at the World Championships in Val Gardena in 1970, the man from Ortisei also looked after the Italian national team around Gustav Thöni. “With Ivo Mahlknecht, Val Gardena is losing a ski pioneer who was able to achieve numerous top results, especially at national level. We express our deepest condolences to the relatives and wish them much strength and comfort during this difficult time. May Ivo rest in peace,” said the board members of the Saslong Classic Club led by President Rainer Senoner. The SportNews -Editor agrees. Ski pioneer Ivo Mahlknecht is dead

Ivo Mahlknecht, one of the greatest pioneers in South Tyrol's ski scene, has died at the age of 80. During his active career he was one of the best and most successful local ski racers.
