Ski retirement in Italy: “Now I want to be a mom”

Francesca Marsaglia competed in her last ski race on Saturday. The 32-year-old from Rome announced her retirement after the Super-G in Lenzerheide. “I won't tell you it was easy, but I can tell you it was very emotional for me. Who would have thought that from the Colosseum I would achieve rankings in the top 7 in the world in all four of my disciplines?”

Francesca Marsaglia's career is indeed a special one, after all, she grew up in Rome, which is atypical for winter sports. Nevertheless, Matteo Marsaglia's sister has managed to reach the top of the world in alpine skiing. She achieved top 7 results in the downhill, super-G, giant slalom and combination, with her crowning achievement in December 2019: In Lake Louise, “Frenci” came third in the downhill – her first and only Podium place. “Fortunately, I was in the best team that Italy has ever had.” Francesca Marsaglia Now Marsaglia is stepping back – also because her body no longer wants to. “He signaled to me that he was no longer competitive at the highest level. I'm happy that I was able to be part of the World Cup for 14 years. “Fortunately, I was in the best team that Italy has ever had,” says the 32-year-old, reflecting on her career. “I experienced the best days during my World Cup debut in Sestriere 2008 and my podium finish in Lake Louise. This was the end of a period in which I had to take breaks again and again and even thought about ending my career.”

Marsaglia has competed in 225 World Cup races and has taken part in World Championships and the Olympic Games. “I would like to thank the entire ski world, especially my teammates, who were always so sweet to me,” said the speed specialist. What's next? “I will now take time to think about what I will do in the future. I would like to start training as a ski instructor. And I want to be a mom. That’s always been my dream.”
