Ski ace devastated: “Life can be cruel”

It was March 11, 2018 when Frenchman Brice Roger stunned the ski world. In the Super-G in Kvitfjell the podium was actually already complete, with Kjetil Jansrud at the top, Beat Feuz in 2nd and Adrian Smiseth Sejersted in 3rd. Because it is almost impossible for a runner beyond start number 40 to finish in the top three. Actually! Because on that March 11th, Brice Roger had an incredible day and raced to 49rd place with start number 3 (!). This not only marked his second World Cup podium of his career, but also one of the biggest sensations of the winter. Two cruciate ligament tears within a few months This unforgettable day in the Frenchman's life was now three and a half years ago. And the situation surrounding Brice Roger is unfortunately completely different at the moment. In February of this year, the 31-year-old tore his cruciate ligament, which he recovered well from. But fate struck again in a bad way just before the Olympic season.

“Bad news,” writes Roger on social media and explains: “It’s probably one of the most difficult moments of my career. The cruciate ligament, which tore in February 2021, tore again a week ago during a descent." The Frenchman himself is puzzling over why. "It's difficult to accept and understand why it broke again with such a small slip. I’ve put 1000 percent into getting in shape for the Olympics this year.”

The disappointment is therefore huge. “The feeling on skis was very good, I had no pain, no fear and felt physically great. But life can be cruel sometimes. Is it fate? Who knows. I had the operation today (Monday, editor's note) and everything went very well. Now I will take the time to digest this hard blow and get back to work.” Personal Brice Roger has completed 106 World Cup races in his career, achieving two third places. He raced into the top 10 ten more times. In February 2018 he competed at the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang and achieved a strong 8th place in the downhill. In his seven World Cup appearances he made it into the top 20 six times, with a 7th place in the Åre Super-G being his best result.
