“Ski broadcasts like 50 years ago”

Two days before the start of the World Cup slalom in Levi, Daniel Yule discussed the Ski World Cup in an interview with the Swiss tabloid Blick. “It cannot be the future of skiing that the best downhill skiers are allowed to choose their starting number first. That's why number one won ahead of number two a few times last winter. This means that the big emotions fall completely by the wayside,” says the economics student, criticizing the start number mode on the descent.

But there is also room for improvement in his special discipline of slalom: “I often find the broadcast of a slalom quite boring. Most of the TV cameras are still in the same places as in the 1970s, and the steepness of the terrain is not taken into account enough." And that's not all for the team Olympic champion and third in the slalom classics in Kitzbühel and Schladming: “To be honest: who watches a first slalom run on TV on a beautiful Saturday morning? "I don't know many people who do that," says Yule, "so I'm sure the ratings could be increased enormously if our races could start in the evening." The example of the “Night Race” in Schladming proves Yule right, because the night slalom had a higher audience rating on Austrian television last winter than the downhill run in Kitzbühel.

The women will compete in their first slalom of the season on Saturday, while the men will start the World Cup winter in Levi on Sunday after the cancellation of Sölden. The starting times are 10.15:13.15 a.m. and XNUMX:XNUMX p.m.
