Ski World Cup: These were the winners and losers

Mikaela Shiffrin: The American has become the most successful alpine skier in ski history this season. Ingemar Stenmark's long-term record (86 victories) has been wiped out; after 14 victories this season, Shiffrin goes into the summer break with 88 World Cup victories. The overall World Cup winner, still only 28 years old, was also the best in slalom and giant slalom, won three World Cup medals (gold and two silver) and also scored points off the slopes with her open demeanor.

Marco Odermatt: What Shiffrin is to women, Marco Odermatt is to men. As if proof of dominance was needed, the Swiss also smashed Hermann Maier's 20-year-old points record in the last race of the season. Odermatt collected 2042 points this year. 13 season victories, overall World Cup, giant slalom and super-G ball, as well as World Cup gold in downhill and giant slalom illustrate the “Odi” season of superlatives.

Italy's ladies: Italy's women have achieved 26 podiums this season, setting a new record. Responsible for this were Sofia Goggia (8), Federica Brignone (7), Marta Bassino (7) and Elena Curtoni (4). Only the slalom remains the biggest problem child for the Azzurre. From a South Tyrolean perspective, Elisa Platino was able to score her first World Cup points this year, but the Delago sisters completely fell short of expectations.

Switzerland: For the third time in the last four years, the Nations Cup goes to Switzerland. The Swiss lead over Austria has never been as big as this year (2.589 points). This is mainly thanks to Marco Odermatt, but also other driving forces such as Lara Gut-Behrami, Wendy Holdener, Loic Meillard, Daniel Yule and Ramon Zenhäuser.

Norway's team: 42 individual podium places, including 16 victories by six different athletes, speak for themselves. The Scandinavians around Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, Henrik Kristoffersen, Lucas Braathen and Ragnhild Mowinckel impressed everyone with their quick swings. This is underlined by the national points records for men (over 5.000) and women (over 2.000).

Speed King and Queen: Norway's Aleksander Aamodt Kilde (6 wins) and Italy's Sofia Goggia (5 wins) dominated the premier discipline of downhill and deservedly took the crowns. Small flaw: Others became world champions.

Injuries: Despite a busy racing calendar with the World Championships as the highlight of the season, there were relatively few serious injuries - at least among the top aces.

FLOPS: ÖSV winning runner: Only seven Austrian victories mean the poorest result for the ÖSV in 38 years. Vincent Kriechmayr is responsible for four of them. Marco Schwarz, Cornelia Hütter and Nina Ortlieb each won once.

Lack of diversity: Only the four nations Switzerland, Norway, Austria and France also had daily winners in the men's World Cup. Italy remained winless for the first time in 39 years. Clement Noel prevented a similar fate for France with his Schladming coup.

ÖSV technical women: The season of the ÖSV technicians can be described as disastrous. In 21 slalom and giant slalom races, Katharina Troupe only achieved third place. The tragic figure in the misery was Katharina Liensberger, who experienced a horror season and was never able to stop her negative spiral.

Italy men's team: For the first time in 39 years, Italy remained winless. Even Dominik Paris, who has secured the most victories in recent years, could not prevent this scenario. The Ultner even remained without a downhill podium this year. In slalom, Alex Vinatzer is the great hope for a better future. But the World Cup bronze winner still lacks consistency. In the giant slalom, the young Filippo Della Vite was at least a small ray of hope. Top talent Giovanni Franzoni, however, was out due to injury. In total there were only five podium places: three by Casse, one by Paris (second in the Super-G in Cortina) and one by Schieder (second in the downhill in Kitzbühel). The Castelrotto native is one of the winners of this World Cup season.

Overseas trips: The men crossed the pond twice this season - a model that needs to be questioned, and not just because of the CO2 footprint. To make matters worse, Aspen failed the acid test as a World Cup location forced by FIS boss Johan Eliasch for various reasons.
