Goodbye to the ski circus: the next star is calling it quits

No matter whether the race was difficult, whether the result wasn't as desired or whether it was enough to be at the front: Marie-Michèle Gagnon always managed to keep a smile on her face. The Canadian is considered a cheerful person in the ski scene. But now the Canadian has made a decision with a heavy heart: she will end her career at the end of this season.

“It is the right time to quit,” the 33-year-old wrote in an emotional letter published on the Canadian Ski Federation website. “I have had incredible experiences and celebrated successes that went far beyond what a young ski racer from Mont-Original could dream of.”

The resignation list is getting longer The rumor that Gagnon would end his career had been circulating for some time. Probably also because her fiancé Travis Ganong is also thinking about saying goodbye to the ski world. In any case, the Canadian is not the first star to put her skis in the corner this year. Greats like Beat Feuz, Matthias Mayer and Mauro Caviezel have already said goodbye. Matteo Marsaglia also announced on Sunday that he is retiring after this season .

In her letter, Gagnon recalls her first steps on skis and says she “immediately fell in love” with the sport. The North American took a special turn in her skiing career: initially she was at home in the technical disciplines, later she became more and more of a speed skier. “I am particularly proud of the fact that I achieved a top-five ranking in all disciplines,” said Gagnon, who was trained by South Tyrolean coach Hansjörg Plankensteiner for the past two seasons.

Lots of lovely memories In total, she has taken part in 275 World Cup races, three Olympics and eight World Cups. She was at the top of the World Cup twice, namely in the combined event, where she was also able to secure the small crystal ball in 2014. “But I’m not a fan of numbers,” says Marie-Michèle Gagnon and adds: “I much prefer memories, for example of the many hotel room dance parties, the sunrises on the mountain peaks, all the meals with the ski family or even that Days when we got to play tourist all over the world.”
