Ski cross: Debora Pixner suffers a knee injury

The 24-year-old had to unexpectedly take evasive action during a training run because her teammate Sabine Wolfsgruber had a serious fall in front of her. During this maneuver, Pixner tore the cruciate ligament in his left knee. It wasn't the first time that the ski crosser from Pfelders was injured; she was diagnosed with the same injury in 2006, 2008 and 2010.

“It was an extremely unfortunate situation,” Pixner described the scene to the daily newspaper Dolomiten. “Sabine fell in front of me. In order not to run over them, I could no longer push a wave. I landed strangely on my left foot and immediately heard a crack. I knew immediately that something had happened."

Wolfsgruber was taken to Sondalo hospital by helicopter, but was able to leave a short time later despite suffering a concussion. In Pixner's case, the diagnosis was much worse: a torn cruciate ligament in his left knee, along with meniscus and cartilage damage.

The 24-year-old was operated on by knee specialist Christian Fink at the Hochrum Clinic in Innsbruck last Saturday. “The season is over for me. Now I can at least concentrate on my law studies in Innsbruck,” said Pixner dejectedly to the daily newspaper Dolomiten.

The ski crosser finished in the top 21 seven times in 10 ski cross World Cup starts.
