Olympic snowboard champion wins downhill skiing

Ester Ledecká is a phenomenon. At the Winter Olympics on February 8th in Beijing, she won gold in the parallel giant slalom for snowboarders. Now she went one better in the first of two World Cup downhills in Crans-Montana and won her third World Cup victory in the Alpine ski circuit, her second in a downhill event.

Especially in the upper, winding section, Ledecká, who started in 8th place, showed off her qualities and gained decisive advantages. Nobody came close to the Czech woman's best time. Second place went to the Norwegian Ragnhild Mowinckel (+2 seconds), the Austrian Cornelia Hütter took third place (+0,21). The 3-year-old Swiss Priska Nufer took fourth place (+0,42) with start number 30 and celebrated her best World Cup result to date.

For Ledecká, it is the second podium finish in a World Cup ski race this season after third place in the downhill run in Cortina d'Ampezzo in January. The 3 Super-G Olympic champion missed out on a medal at the Winter Olympics in Beijing this year; she took “Blech” in the Alpine combined and 2th place in the Super-G. Little to gain for Azzurre There was little to gain for the Azzurre on Saturday. Sofia Goggia ended up as the best starter among Italy's women's skiers in 12th place, 1,47 seconds behind the victorious Ledecká. Goggia, who won silver behind the Swiss Corinne Suter at the Olympic downhill in Beijing, showed an unusually reserved ride.

Bronze winner Nadia Delago also had a hard time on the soft snow. The 24-year-old from Wolkenstein ultimately ended up in 14th place with the Austrian Stephanie Venier (both +1,57). Her 26-year-old sister Nicol took 19th place, at the same time as the Frenchwoman Romane Miradoli (both +2,06). Karoline Pichler from Petersberg finished the race in 38th place (+3,12).

Olympic snowboard champion wins downhill skiing

The Czech Ester Ledecká has once again proven what a multi-talent she is. She recently won snowboard gold in Beijing and on Saturday she triumphed at the downhill ski World Cup in Crans-Montana, Switzerland.
