Sofia Goggia: “I have to think of something else for Beijing”

Despite a serious injury, Sofia Goggia was able to celebrate a positive end to the season. The downhill specialist won four of the first five races and the lead she gained was ultimately enough to win the small crystal ball.

The goals for the coming season are of course similarly ambitious, and the Winter Olympics in particular are likely to be a great incentive for the 28-year-old. Winning the gold medal in South Korea in 2018 makes Goggia one of the favorites for Beijing. As word gets around in the paddock, the Italian has to prepare for a possible top duel with Lara Gut. “I believe in rumors. Lara is obviously really, really fast.”

The Swiss woman had also fought her way back to form after a serious injury and is now aiming for the greatest success in her already impressive career – gold at the Olympics. As usual, Goggia speaks highly of her competitor: “I admire Lara. The way she rode last winter is incredible. She has set her sights on the gold medal.” The focus is not just on the Olympics But Goggia also knows that the Winter Games will only take place at the end of the season. Therefore, the thought of the Olympics should not become too big; the World Cup should ideally be the focus. “Of course you also want to win in Beijing. But the race takes place on a slope that no one has ever driven on.” Since there is no stop in Beijing in the World Cup, the riders are thrown into the deep end. So luck definitely plays a big role. The Italian has already thought of that: “I already had a lucky charm in South Korea. But I have to think about something else for Beijing.” The focus at the moment is on a successful start to the World Cup. If the form is right, Goggia should also be thinking about a possible gold medal.
