Falls overshadow Suter's victory

Val d'Isere presented itself at its best on Friday in fantastic weather. Just like the Oreiller-Killy piste, which was in excellent condition but also tricky at the same time. Sofia Goggia set up the first benchmark on exactly the same route that the men had traveled the previous week. Despite a big mistake after a jump, the 28-year-old pulverized the previous best time set by Ragnhild Mowinckel in her first speed race after her injury. However, when the Italian swerved at the finish, she shook her head. She suspected that her mistake might have cost her the victory: just a few moments later, last year's speed dominator Corinne Suter started and beat Goggia's time by 11 hundredths of a second. Schmidhofer falls badly All of this was pushed into the background in view of the accident of the Austrian Nicole Schmidhofer. The 31-year-old fell in the lower part of the route and cut through the safety nets with her skis. The race was then interrupted. According to initial information, Schmidhofer was conscious, but she still had to be transported away in the Akia. Federica Brignone also crashed to the ground in exactly the same place; fortunately the Italian was able to reach the finish on her own. Joana Hählen and Alice McKennis suffered the same fate. Afterwards, it was noticeable that the athletes were somewhat reserved, which meant that there were no peak times. The most important news of the day, however, was that no one was seriously injured. Breezy Johnson from the United States was happy about third place and her first World Cup podium finish. With a sparkling clean ride, she pushed Ilka Stuhec off the podium. In the absence of her sister Nicol, Nadia Delago with the high start number 36 took 27th place, Verena Gasslitter missed the points. The result:
