South Tyrol and Sölden - a difficult relationship

At the weekend, the athletes and fans will end the tiresome wait for the start of the season with a lavish winter sports festival in the lower Ötztal. In the past, however, there was hardly any reason for the South Tyrolean World Cup starters to celebrate, as the Rettenbach Glacier often proved to be an extremely unpleasant place, although this trend was recently on the verge of a reversal two years ago. At that time, Manfred Mölgg unexpectedly rushed into second place. In the women's category, Denise Karbon impressed in seventh place. However, this was the first and only time since 2007 that a South Tyrolean top ten result was achieved for both women and men.

Last year too, the local RTL specialists placed outside the top ten. Manfred Mölgg took 25th place and was immediately ahead of Florian Eisath. In the women's race, Denis Karbon came 19th, while Manuela Mölgg and Lisa Agerer even missed qualifying for the second run. Eisath and Manuela Mölgg will try again this year, while the young Simon Maurberger and Karoline Pichler are new to the team.

Carbon twice on the podium

Although Manuela Mölgg and Karbon also made it to the podium in 2010 and 2009 before Manfred Mölgg, the relationship with Sölden remains a kind of love-hate relationship for the local ski aces. The best proof is the race four years ago, when Karbon and Mölgg took a comfortable double lead, but the dream of a double victory came to an abrupt end in the second round. Mölgg was eliminated, Karbon came third.

Incidentally, Denise Karbon was the only South Tyrolean to date to be included in the long list of winners in Sölden. She won the World Cup opener in 2007. Perhaps this success will serve as an incentive for the local athletes next weekend to ultimately form a close friendship with Sölden.

South Tyrol and Sölden - a difficult relationship

The relationship status of the South Tyrolean ski racers and the World Cup venue Sölden can confidently be described as “complicated”. Very special feelings of happiness mix with years of disappointment. A real love was never kindled.
