South Tyrolean Bormio madness: Paris before Innerhofer

The World Cup downhill in Bormio on Friday was all about the South Tyrolean ski racers. First Christof Innerhofer from Gaiser set an outstanding best time, then came “Domme”: Dominik Paris from Ultimo rocked the demanding slope in the best heavy metal style and took the lead, 0,36 seconds ahead of Innerhofer.

The Swiss Beat Feuz took third place, 0,52 seconds behind. The American Bryce Bennett surprisingly took fourth place (+0,67 seconds). Bennett had already narrowly missed the podium in fourth place in Val Gardena.

The last South Tyrolean double victory in the Alpine Ski World Cup took place on March 15, 2017. Paris also won the downhill race at the World Cup final in Aspen. Back before Peter Fill. South Tyroleans tame “Stelvio” The infamous “Stelvio” slope was also a real endurance test for the ski racers this Friday. From 2255 meters above sea level, the route went downhill for around 3270 meters over a distance of 1000 meters to arrive at 1245 meters. Although high temperatures had taken a bit of a toll on the “Beast Stelvio” overnight and it was no longer quite as icy, the demanding slope still demanded everything from the athletes.

The Gaiser Christof Innerhofer was already one of the favorites in advance. He did justice to this role. Innerhofer, who started second just after the Austrian Hannes Reichelt, showed an almost flawless and clean ride with a direct line and took the lead. Only the Swiss Beat Feuz with starting number six was able to pose a bit of a threat to “Inner” and placed second place, 0,16 seconds behind Gaiser. Then comes “Domme” But then it came: last year's winner Dominik Paris went full throttle from the start. He chose a tighter line than the starters in front of him. In the first section, Paris was still behind Innerhofer. In the middle section, “Domme” finally got a small lead, showed high speed and rocked the “Stelvio” down to the last few meters. In the end, the scoreboard lit up green, the Ultner's incredible time meant a lead of 0,36 seconds over his teammate. Nobody from the rest of the field managed to pose a threat to the two South Tyroleans.

Things didn't go well for the third South Tyrolean. Werner Heel from Passiria started the race with start number 38, but clearly missed out on a place in the top 30 and the associated World Cup points. In the end he had to settle for 38th place. Falls before the finish A serious crash by Klemen Kosi overshadowed the race. The Slovenian fell shortly before the finish and was thrown into the safety net at full speed. The doctors rushed to the scene of the accident. A few minutes later the all-clear was given: Kosi was approachable. After receiving first aid, the injured Slovenian was taken to hospital by rescue helicopter. The fall caused a longer interruption (see also own article) .
