South Tyroleans are ready for Wengen

Won the downhill, failed in the combination shortly before the finish and on the way to a possible double victory. For Dominik Paris, the Bormio weekend was worth it. Even if the threader in the combination slalom was bitter, one thing is certain: the Ultner is back and skiing fast again.

No podium place for Paris before Bormio

Until the descent on the Stelvio slope, the season had not gone as planned for the 28-year-old from St. Walburg. The best result was fifth place in Beaver Creek. But then Paris showed why the slope in Bormio is one of his favorite routes and left everyone behind on the descent. Paris was also the fastest in the combined downhill, but was eliminated in the slalom. Peter Fill stepped in to replace him. The Castelrotto native only had to admit defeat to the outstanding Frenchman Alexis Pinturault in the combination.

No Wengen departure last year

Now the South Tyroleans have the next chance in Wengen to show that the form is right. The combination is on the program on Friday, and the classic Lauberhorn descent takes place on Saturday. The descent is particularly feared. On the one hand, because it is by far the longest downhill route in the World Cup calendar. On the other hand, because there is no shortage of key places and difficult passages - especially the Kernen-S and the spectacular Hundschopf.

This year the speed aces are particularly keen on the Wengen descent. Last year it snowed so heavily that the race had to be canceled. The last winner dates back to 2016 and is called Aksel Lund Svindal.

Innerhofer last South Tyrolean on the Wengen podium

South Tyroleans, on the other hand, often find it difficult in Wengen. In 2013, Christof Innerhofer won the downhill, a year earlier he was third. Otherwise, there have been no podium places for the local speed specialists in Switzerland recently. The best South Tyrolean on the last Wengen descent was Dominik Paris. In 2016 he narrowly missed the podium in fourth place.

This year six Azzurri are tackling the descent. In addition to Paris, Innerhofer and Fill, Emanuele Buzzi, Mattia Casse and Davide Cazzaniga are in action. Werner Heel, however, is not there. The first training session in Wengen will take place on Tuesday. There are a total of three training runs on the program.
